INTFIODUCTION A greeting t'requenfly heard in lnodern times is "What's new?" This question rellects thc common curiosity we all possess regarding the welfare of our friends and relatives - inquiring as to what they are doing and how tltey are getting along. On a broader scale, it could also refer to the many innovations and discoveries in various fields such as politics, science, art, the stock nlarket, the latest l'ashions. etc.. etc. In lact there are so many new things to learn that there is a tendency, to lbrget about the great achievements of the past. Which leads to the thought that instead of asking "What's new?" we should be inqu.iring "What's great?" voyage the moon is a great modern accourplishment. but so is Mozart's GAminor Symphony. The Salk vaccine against polio was to an inrportant discovery but the world is also indebted to Dostoyevsky forhaving written tlre line novel The Brothers Karamazov. And while Einstein's theory of relativity' sltook up the scientific world several decades ago, a simiiar peak was reached by Nlichelangelo in his paintings and sculpture three hundred years ago. We can all benefit from a stLrdy of the great creations of the past and in this volume the early-grade pianist has an opportunity to play some of tlte enchanting melodies by the classic masters of music.
The compositions are arranged in order of difficulty with the easier orles toward the front of the book. Thus, the pieces through page 2l are in grade one while pages 22 through 35 contain selections that are in grade one and one half. Tl-re remainder of the volume is in grade two. So what else is new?
