BBA – Year 1 Mathematics Assignment 5 Date assigned: September 13th, 2014 Date due: Friday, September 19, 2014 (Before start of lecture)



Note: The marks for each question are written in the respective questions. The total marks of this assignment is 120. However, it will be graded over 100. Try to obtain more than 100 because the bonus points will be added to your overall grade. For example: Your score in this assignment = 110 Your score in the next assignment = 80 Then your average score will be

Solutions will be posted the evening of the day the assignment is due and discussions will be entertained in the next class. If you can’t solve a question, post your queries on the facebook group. They will be answered within 24 hours. Do this early as questions posted too late (i.e. the night before the assignment is due) may remain unanswered. Utilize the tutorial classes to bombard the T.A’s with questions and how to answer them. Make the most of your available resources! PLEASE DON’T COPY from your colleagues. If instances of copying are found, you will receive a 0 on the assignment. Please note: Absenteeism is not an excuse for not submitting your assignments on time! If an extension if required, permission should be requested well in advance citing a credible excuse. If you cannot make it to class on the day of the submission, send it with one of your classmates or leave it on the college reception or with the TA’s on the same day or before. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date mentioned and you will receive a 0 no matter how well you do. A calculator has been marked up 15% and is being sold for $78.50. How much did the store pay the manufacturer of the calculator? [15] 5. To produce 1 unit of a new product, a company determines that the cost for material is $2.50 and the cost of labor is $4. The fixed cost, regardless of sales volume, is $5000. If the cost to a wholesaler is $7.40 per unit, determine the least number of units that must be sold by the company to realize a profit. [20] 6. Suppose a company offers you a sales position with your choice of two methods of determining your yearly salary. One method pays $35000 plus a bonus of 3% of your yearly sales. The other method pays a straight 5% commission on your sales. For what yearly sales amount is it better to choose the first method? [20]
