With the rapid development of economy and tremendous changes of technology in contemporary China, people are no longer satisfied with the existing living conditions and they raise higher demands towards comfort, variety, selectivity and adaptability. From that point, in addition to ensuring the supply efficiency of houses, it is increasingly important to improve the functional quality in residential space design. The “human-oriented” concept pays more attention to building relationship between dwelling space and natural context, satisfying the basic functions of houses and at the same time endowing them with a deeper sense. From the perspective of designers, the requirements of clients and developing trend of houses bring more opportunities and challenges for them.

FOREWORD

House is undoubtedly considered as the most common, important and special architectural form. The conscious behaviour of dwelling symbolises the beginning of construction activity in human history. At the same time, the evolution and development of dwelling space chronicles the growth of human civilization.

endeavour to improve the living environment and to satisfy modern living requirements. Cases selected in this book are good examples to show efforts they have made.

Family is the “cell” of human society and house as the “container” of family life is the physical home for all the dreams of human beings. In Western countries, architects are educated to begin their careers from designing small houses. Usually, after graduating from school, students majoring in architectural design are required to communicate with clients about their requirements and work on site in order to improve the abilities to perceive life and deal with materials and details. Through years of practicing, they gradually have a clear and deep understanding of daily life demand and architectural designs, which lays a solid foundation for their later careers to meet bigger challenges.

In the past 20 years, the urban society has experienced rapid yet extensive development in China. In that period, simple and superficial imitation of foreign styles is hotly pursued in residential design. The main reasons for that are developers’ interest in quick profit and lack of values and aesthetic accomplishiment. Besides, more attentions are paid on public architecture design and less systematic research into residential design has been made in a long time. Excellent residential projects are relatively few and not being promoted in effective ways. However, selecting residential projects that embody global outlook and sustainable, cultural and modern living modes, this book elaborates the diversified living requirements in contemporary China and is worth reading.

People do not have their own land under the specific land policy in China, and thus they cannot design their own houses completely. However, architects manage to create “dream home” for clients to realise some of their dreams for living. In addition, more and more architects

住宅是最基本、最常见,也是最重要、最特别的建筑类型,有意识的 居住行为标志着人类建造活动的开始,住宅建筑的发展也印证了人类文明 的进步历程。 家庭是人类社会的细胞,住宅是家庭生活的物质容器,也是所有人类 理想的物质归宿。西方经典建筑教育中建筑师的培养便是从设计小住宅开 始的,建筑学生从学校毕业以后,参与到设计工作之中,从和业主交流设 计要求和使用需求开始,到施工过程中不间断的工地服务,不断积累感知 生活的敏锐度和处理材料与构造细节的能力。通过一个个项目的磨练,理 解生活需求认知设计问题,年复一年夯实职业基础。最终在通过小住宅项 目积攒足够的专业能力之后,有能力去面对更大规模更复杂的设计挑战。 中国特定的土地政策,使得个人无法拥有土地并按照自己的意愿设计 自己的住宅。即便如此,对家的向往还是让我们看到书中列举的一些项目 以变通的方式,在某种程度上实现了自己的生活理想;而在本书中更多的 我们看到了一些开发项目在满足当代中国生活需求、改善居住环境方面所 作的积极探索与努力。 中国社会和城市经历了过去二十多年快速粗放的发展,对外来文化简 单的、表面的外在模仿是这一时期住宅设计呈现的重要形态特征。“欧陆 风”的肆虐固然有开发商急功近利、价值观缺失、美学修养不足的原因;

CONCRETE SLIT HOUSE

The project is located in Nanjing city and differs from the surrouding houses built in the 1920s in style. Architects choose concerete rather than grey brick as the main material and create an abstract form. The deck in the outside courtyard, floor inside as well as wall and ceilings are completely covered with wooden stripe (2 inches long), making it rich in nostalgia. The Z-shaped glass slit brings aboundant sunlight into the interior, forming the main feature of the entire house. The logical rationality of the Concrete Slit House can be expressed through the following points: the integrity of the interior elements, the harmony of the functional and spatial system, the transparency of the exterior façade and interior surface, the continuity between architecture and the surroundings, and the relationship between architecture and the paved site. The staircase inside divides the interior into two parts and stands out from the entire structure, making the two parts vertically detached and forming a fissure. A zigzagging band of glass cleaves the 2,900-square-foot house in two and brings daylight inside. Slit is used to link the two parts with half floor height difference: a 2-floor-height living area and a 1.5-floor dining area, both of which can overlook each other. Located in a historical neighbourhood in Nanjing and surrounded by grey-brick houses with a history of 100 years, the house differs in textile from the surroundings but shares the same quality in essence. The cast-in-place concrete wall and the precast façade and roofing emphasizes the division of the two parts and the fissure is stressed at the same time to form an external contrast between the house itself and the surroundings.

POETS RESIDENCES

Owners of the houses are not rich men, but they cherish countryside life as other ordinary people in China. Now, their dream is realised after a long time of pursuit. The main material of red brick, popular in local area, is produced by the nearby brickkiln and the construction team are local farmers. Thus, the budget of the entire house is 800RMB/m 2 . Architects and owners interact actively through the entire process. The residences are more a project that makes common people’s dream towards countryside life come true than a design work that belongs to architects. Located by Shijiu Lake in Gaochun County, Poets Residences are owned by two poets who are friends as well. The site enjoyed a strong local flavour with a brick kiln to produce terracotta brick for nearby residences. The design adopts the theme of “courtyard” which is expressed in the site plan and interior spaces. The two houses are respectively designed with two different layouts: courtyard enclosed on three sides and courtyard enclosed on four sides. In addition, the functional spaces can be arranged in the shape of right angles as well as in a linear way for the sake of the expansive site. The various and continuous circulation lines for communication, movement, relaxation and exhibition composed the main elements of the interior which are as well the rational choice under the low technique condition.

Site Plan

The key feature of the two houses is of course the exterior wall: the main structure is closely wrapped up with red brick to highlight the local style. Three different textures of brick made up the façade. An interlocking pattern leaves perforations between bricks and protruding bricks cast shadows along the wall. Windows punctuate the texture and the brickwork along the edges of these portals further develops abstract geometric relations while remaining loyal to the structural logic.

China International Practical Exhibition of Architecture is sited by the Buddha’s Hand Lake near Pukou Ancient Mountain and Forest Park. A collective of 24 renowned architects from China and other countries all over the world were invited to design four public buildings and twenty detached residences. Furthermore, each residence was required to have at least five bedrooms with bathroom and the total area was not more than 500 square metres including living room, dining room and other public spaces. The main function of the residences was for family holiday and business reception.

022

The No.4 House designed by AZL Architects adopted the vertical layout which was not commonly seen in the construction of mountainous house. The volume of 500 square metres was divided into five cubes, stacking and forming a four-storey structure. The design was not only corresponsive to the special typology of the site, but also preserved the exsiting forest and the hillside land to a large extent. The transverse fissures between every two connecting cubes were enlarged at a special place on every level to frame the beautiful sceneries outside. What’s more, the sceneries changed seen from different angels through the “fissures”, a modern expression of the traditional Chinese landscape painting being unfolded horizontally but in a three-dimensional way.

The Water House is a private house located at the foot of snow mountain Yulong in Lijiang. Sitting on a wide open sloping site, which has a panoramic view towards Lijing ancient town and the surrounding landscape, the house has an open yet closed courtyard space. Closed in the sense, it is “secured” and “separated” physically from the "outside world” by design elements such as stone wall, reflective pool and levelling; yet it is open visually towards the outside environment. The low profile architectural language by using local materials and simple “non-experimental” tectonic skills is meant to blend the “artificial” into nature and local culture. Here, focus is given to space and atmosphere. Emphasis is put on local-texture and non-decorative detailing. The idea is to make the house a background, from which, nature could be appreciated to its extreme.

026

Besides the steel structure designed by a professional project team, the remaining of the construction was finally done by local experienced villagers, not simply to reduce the total cost, but as a clear message of regional engagement with architectural practice in the local context.

WELL HALL

Lantian, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province MADA s.p.a.m. Gross Floor Area: 192.8m2 Design/Completion Time: 2005/2005 Architect: MADA s.p.a.m. Design Team: MA Qingyun, SUN Dahai, WANG Shan Photographer: Courtesy of the architect

By these changes, the architecture can reflect the surrounding landscape context with exotic flavour and adjust itself to the exotic way of life. The "Well Hall", with the length extended and the wall much heightened, reflects the landscape of surrounding mountains and rivers in scale. Consequently, its two courtyards look much longer and narrower. The lower half of the north wing-room is hidden in the shadow, which is in sharp contrast with another half that is exposed to the shining sunlight. Under sunlight and shadow, homogeneous materials show different textures and tones.

Master Plan

The Jade Valley Winery is located in the county of Lantian, to the southwest of Xi'an City, between the Qingling Mountain Range and the Guanzhong Loess Plateau. As the accessorial guestroom building for Jade Valley Winery, the "Well Hall" presents a time-space splicing between indigenous style and exotic life, which over throws the inheritance system for history and traditional culture. Situated on the top of a plateau, the "Well Hall" imitates the civilian house in Guanzhong area, which features small-bay living rooms, wing-rooms with single slope roof, and few narrow and long courtyards. Based on these features, the architect makes some changes in the "Well Hall" with regard to extension of the scale, layers of the surface and transition of the functions.

032

“Fabrication” is applied to the surface of the "Well Hall". The two skin layers, inner bricks in red and outer bricks in grey, are “weaved” together by interlaced header bricks. The grain of the rough wall surface and the resulting blocky shadow moderate the highness of the wall, which makes the architecture friendlier. The fabrication is applied to the exterior wall only, while the two inner courtyards are partitioned just by a common brick wall. Therefore, it seems that the architecture is “wrapped” by the surface. As a result, the inner courtyards become a space of “internalized exteriority”. The building materials for the Well Hall are all from the local area. Builders are villagers from neighbouring villages, who implement the construction according to MADA s.p.a.m.’s design sketch, remarks and teaching-bydoing demonstrations. During this process, emphasis has been put on the specific locus rather than the locality and indigenousness, which makes the architecture a specific individual. With regard to the individual architecture, the design based on the local context, and the construction, are the two aspects of the independent creation. On one hand, the design concept is obtained from the local culture from a macro-view; on the other hand, the Well Hall is constructed according to the specific locus and functions from a micro-view, which makes it be in harmony with the surrounding environment and the village life.

THE CONCAVE HOUSE

Design Background This project, including multiple functions such as residence, studio and gallery, is specially designed for Mr. FENG Dazhong who is a prestigious artist in China. The site is located at the downtown area in Benxi, Liaoning Province, facing mountains which turn into the best landscape view for this project. With the aim of relieving the conflicts between the fast pace of urban lifestyle and the peaceful mind of the artist, this project is intended to create a harmonious internal space and interaction between nature and architecture. The building is neither constructed for public nor purely for private purpose. Therefore, it requires not only a quiet living space for the artist but also a dynamic gallery space for visitors. As a whole the building is filled with profound cultural experience. Design Concept The "Ao" (凹) Shape The building is inspired by the Chinese character 凹, which means concave. The shape is a cube with all side roofs inclining downwardly to the centre. Three inter-connected yards create the atmosphere with all views pulled into the internal of the building. This concept also coincidentally matches a traditional Chinese housing design mode. The roofs are designed to block out the vision of buildings surrounded so that when people stand at the platform in the middle of the rooftop, they can only feel the sky, the moon light, themselves, and the time passing by.

The Inner Courtyards Within the brick cube, the artistic creation of the Academy Courtyard the Bamboo Courtyard, and the Mountain Courtyard has made the interior space unique and full of surprise while the exterior is stable and serious. These yards are like Chinese lantern lightening the rooms surrounding them and creating a dramatic atmosphere. This design originates from traditional Chinese building mode and culture but uses a modern way of expression and regional criticism to reconsider traditions, which lead to the result of an oriental modern architecture. The Brick Skin Since the site is located in Northeast China, thermal insulation becomes crucial. A custom-made 600mm long brick can solve this problem and the colour makes people feel warm. Being different from the rough and hard character of the single brick, the skin is specially designed as a translucent coating which has openings grow out and fade away. It forms a network of tension and blurs the boundary between interior and exterior. The Twin Walls The twin walls create the entrance of the building, also acting as the courtyard walls that clarify the boundary. The inner wall which is parallel to the building uses the same design method as the translucent building skins. The outer wall is solid and draws the boundary line of the site. These walls form a triangular water garden pointing to the entrance and the concrete entrance extends out from the walls creating a sculptural space.

Section

MENG-HOUSE

Background Meng-House, a reconstruction project for a private house, is located in the eastern part of a residential community in Jinan, Shandong Province, where there are mountain peaks providing a good view. The original house was just handed over. The community features Western style in architectural design. Based on the existing situation and the owner’s requirements, the architect managed to remodel the house in terms of architectural and landscape design. Feature of Idea The overall style and the function of Western-style community do not have an inevitable inner link with the local nature and the cultural atmosphere, so the reconstruction itself has not been limited to a certain style or pattern. The aim was to rebuild an appropriate relationship between the existing house and the surrounding landscape to improve the spatial quality. The

added structures of a wooden box and a glass box on different levels neither conform to the original house in style, nor contrast with it. They co-exist in a peaceful way. The design builds a link between indoor and outdoor spaces and makes full use of the site to bring the beautiful scene of mountains inside the house. What is more important, the owner has more space for different activities. Significance of Design From this project, architects may re-evaluate the significance of style and form of building for people’s life, and seek for an appropriate way to build comfortable residential spaces. On the basis of the original house, the architect rebuilt a space that satisfies the residents’ demands for healthy life and cultural pursuit. At the same time, the design proposes a question: is it significant to imitate Western architectural style in spite of local features and the age?

Abstract “Reinforce the old, introduce the new“ is the theme of the design. Old architecture was well respected and preserved. The house functions as a memory stick, recording every trace that history has made on it. The new addition with the metal façade made of titanium-aluminium alloy expressed a futuristic notion. Being put together with the old house, a dialogue was created between the old and the new. The three compartments that form the two courtyards were given three spatial themes. The north compartment was defined as a “three-dimensional installation”. The old wood structure in this room was exposed and expressed its strength. The middle compartment was defined as a “two-dimensional Chinese painting” - white walls dominate the interior, expressing a sense of relaxation and grace. The south room was defined as a “futuristic space”. The old and the new architecture both conflict and converse with each other. The visual and spatial penetration between the courtyards formed a symphony of tradition and future. Full Story This residence for an artist calls for the restoration of a historically significant classical Chinese "siheyuan" courtyard house, and a new addition within its compounds. This project was particularly challenging because of its site: situated very close to the Forbidden City, the addition had to be sensitive to its external surroundings, hutong neighbourhood, and internal courtyard configuration.

2 The attitude the architects developed for this project was one of sensitive regeneration, where contemporary and modern buildings can symbiotically co-exist with traditional structures. Like many Chinese cities, Beijing’s historical core is succumbing to unrelenting "modern" development because of the difficulty in engaging traditional forms so steeped in history. Its modern uses are formalistically at odds with traditional contexts. However, modern structures can adopt their predecessors’ vocabulary, yet still serve modern functions. The original "siheyuan" was restored, using traditional materials, construction technologies, and local skilled craftsmen and builders. The double courtyard configuration was restored into a void that gives presence to the south-facing buildings. Because of disintegration over the years, the interior was replaced with the original types of floor tiles, wall surfaces, and structural exposure.

The new building, however, was created as an object that floats in the larger south courtyard to face the traditional structures. In dialogue with its immediate predecessor, the new “invisible” building is both oppositional and complementary to the painstakingly restored houses. It is detailed to be independent from the existing courtyard walls so as to create as little impact as possible on the old structure; visually and physically light. Modern materials like glass and steel are used throughout the new building, so as to take advantage of their reflective properties to pay homage to the old. It contains new "modern" programmes like a flexible multipurpose space and an artist studio versus the fixed traditional programmes of the existing structure. Similarly, the light and invisible new building is in contrast to the heavy and commanding presence of the old. They complement each other in form, scale, and function.

This is a house that the architect MA Qingyun designed and built for his father on his homeland. Jade Valley and Qingling Mountain Range are its backdrop which defines the whole territory with a vastly changing landscape, from steep mountain to mild slope from river valley to an infinitely expansive plateau called Middle Plateau. Father's House rests at an ambiguous position between the river (and smoothed stones) and the mountains (and coarse stones). Over time, the river pulls rock out of layers of mountain, offering an abundant source of building material. The relation between water and stone is so accurate that the size of stone correlates precisely to its colour and level of perturbation by the passing water. Reflecting the richness in stone variety, the house panels oscillate between concentrations of dark and light hues, rough and smooth textures. To maximise the stone application both in quantity and local construction methodology is the first and foremost principle of the design. To simplify and homogenise the construction is to minimise the non-local construction technique and mobilisation. Therefore, use of the alien (concrete) remains a minimal and distinct element whereas use of the local (stone and wood) is maximised. The stone is treated differently depending on where it occurs within the didactic realm of the concrete frame. This collision of rough, organic materials with highly regulated and spare form gives the house an ephemeral quality encased in distinctly modern formalism.

THE SQUARE HALL IN SCENERY: A PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL HOUSE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN BEIJING Beijing WSP Architects

Gross Floor Area: About 500m2 Design/Completion Time: 2010/2011 Chief Designer: WSP Architects Design Team: CUI Guangxing, BAI Yunxiang Landscape Designer: LI Zhe Photographer: CHEN Rao

implement them in the entire construction process. Considering current domestic construction technology levels, designers provide face-to-face guidance to workers on site. The architectural concepts are mainly comprised of subjects below : courtyard in the scenery - hope to create a beautiful and traditional landscape building in harmony with nature; square courtyard in the city create a quiet courtyard in the residential community in urban area; brick wall in memory - arouse the memory about old Beijing in the childhood of the owner, with red bricks and green tiles; bamboo courtyard - traditional Chinese courtyard. From inner courtyard to backyard, from house to courtyard - a poetic residence. This is a private residential building located outside of Eastern 5th Ring, Beijing. The original residential house is located in a regular residential community and the owner is a middle-aged couple. As the family becomes large, the couple wants to live in the house with their parents and children, and the owner wants to have an open art workshop and public saloon to entertain friends.

A box made of glass and brick wall is added to the eastern side of the original building, so the bright space links the new and old building. Two French windows are in the eastern and western square hall as the living room. The newly-built building is situated on a sloping base, which is like a light hanging box owing to the special physical features.

The project is a work with the collective efforts of architecture, landscape and interior designers of WSP. Designers also experience a completely different way of work in the small reconstruction project, i.e. they collaborate with structure engineers, producers and construction workers and discuss relevant detailed elements intensively. Designers blend a great number of design ideas and concepts into every specific construction detail, and

The house design wonderfully combines two architectural forms, the modern architecture and traditional Chinese quadrangle, and the exterior glass wall of the building realises a boundless transition and blending of interior and exterior scenery. The landscape designer creates an open space effect of the courtyard by applying simple plant allocation, and meanwhile sets a natural private screen for the residential building itself.

a platform for the promotion of intelligent and green products. The centre serves as an education centre for school children and can host seminars or corporate functions for 200 guests. The four prototype houses explore both innovative and traditional technological solutions including building in lightweight steel and building in bamboo structure. The houses are of different sizes and deploy a wide range of architectural design methods. The objectives are to use Chinese manufactured materials and products whenever possible supplemented by imported products and to integrate these into architectural systems appropriate for China. The real experience of building these prototype houses provide opportunities for different producers to work together. The prototypes can be tested by having Chinese families living in them for short periods and are unique opportunities for university research on sustainable lifestyle. The wetland park in the centre of the project aims to restore the original ecosystem in the valley. It is an ideal place for the visitors to relax and reflect on the issues of sustainable lifestyle. The wetland park with its ponds and reed bed filtration is a fascinating place which stimulates the sense of curiosity in school children. The lifestyle experienced by the visitors is supported by a range of technological solutions. The approach in Expo INTEGER is to adopt appropriate and available solutions for the geographical region in question. Primary sustainable technologies applied include: watershed conservation, solar thermal, rainwater collection and reuse, various water-saving measures, building intelligent control, latest construction and materials solutions, such as prefabricated lightweight steel and bamboo structural system. It is hoped that the technological solutions successfully tested out here can be utilised immediately in housing developments through out the western region of China.

Located in the mountains north of Beijing by the Great Wall, the house is split right in the middle, to save trees already on the site, to separate the public functions from the private ones, and bring the natural scenery into the embrace of the residence. However, it is also an attempt to design a local house in some other ways:

Site Plan

1. To transplant "siheyuan", the traditional Beijing courtyard house, from its dense urban context into the pristine landscape. In the setting of mountain and water, the courtyard is transformed from a space that is enclosed by the rooms all around while in the city to one that is enclosed by the mountains on one side and the house, with its two split halves, on the other. The line between nature and architecture is thus blurred. The house is split to achieve the union of natural and artificial and it is a courtyard house with mountain and water. As a matter of fact, water, a natural stream discovered on the site, is re-routed to meander through the courtyard and flow underneath the glazed entrance lobby floor before going further down the hill. 2. To create a flexible prototype. The design is intended to be duplicated several times in the valley. The angle between the two wings is thus not fixed but can be adjusted to fit the house onto various hill sites. According to the geographical condition of a particular locale, the split house can be transformed into singular house, parallel house, right angle house, bar house, or back-to-back house.

104

3. To make a building that can eventually disintegrate and may not leave too much on the site once it is no longer needed. Based on the tradition of using earth and wood as the primary construction material in China, the frame structure of the Split House is made of laminated wood with rammed earth walls, which provide good insulation with minimum environmental impact. The split also offers the possibility to use only half of the house when number of residents is small to keep the maintenance cost down.

Similarities Between Poem Writing and Architectural Structure In china, poem has limited types and patterns. It is the same as architectural design, which is of limited basic forms. Thus, a certain design can be expressed in the form of poem with fewer structures to create a larger effect. Usually, architects define the basic form of a project first just as poets choose a certain pattern before writing a poem. In this project, a simple “L” shape is proposed; but it is by chance, not predefined. The building structures unfold on the “L” shape, creating a tight and successive spatial scene, which is further highlighted by visual movements. In this way, an abstract and remote feeling is visually interpreted through a certain yet imaginative fragment. Usually, poets and painters have common views towards “form of expression”, that is, sceneries, seasons and human activities are treated equally in the process of art creating. Scenes of daily activities integrate into the entire site through the creation of fragmental units which bring senses of seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting as well as personal hobbies, activities and seasons together. These small units are rhythmically organised into the entire site, symbolising different experiences of life. In this way, a special feeling grows out and fuses into the house. Architects combine their feelings and interests with daily life, which helps completely realise the goal of the project.

Architects manage to achieve the unification of aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic conception emphasied by poets in a physical and sensible way. Life experience and comprehension towards it play an equally important role in the design process. Consequently, feelings of happiness, anger, grief and joy in daily life are gradually upgraded into aesthetic emotion in this project. In other words, the design is an organic whole. A Chinese idiom says “human belongs to nature.” In this project, it can be said “architects belong to nature.” Architects give up the idea of “using materials and techniques to express the design”, but tend to embody the project through interest of formalism and symbolism, creating a deep effect from spiritual aspect. They enjoy great freedom regarding form, but in a defined frame. For this building, all the traditional materials and techniques are abandoned and the visual elements in traditional garden are reduced into simple aesthetic expressions. The modern construction and detail design technology is considered as ancillary method for the first time and can be overlooked in this project. Modern technology and metaphysical pursuit exist independently. In architects’ perspective, the perfect state is achieving equal in material life, but maintaining typical and innovative in mental life.

North Elevations

South Elevations

The House A+B is among the 57-villa development in the west side of Beijing. Adjacent to the clubhouse, these two 670- and 630-square-metre villas are designed side-to-side sharing a dividing wall. They both are two storeys high with a full basement. Two central courtyards with different feelings are placed in the centre. The routing circulation inside each villa displays the architect’s intent to project his scenery experience into the space. The House A+B is the biggest one in the villas, which has a total floor area (including underground floor) of more than 800 square metres. The two houses each have their own inner and outer courtyards. The exterior courtyards are attached at the east side of the houses. Linked by two box structures 18 metres in length and width, 7 metres in height, the two houses comprise two floors above ground and one floor underground. At the east sides of the two houses, two courtyards in a size of 18m x 12m are outstretched, in which there is a stairway leading to the underground basement. As for the overall design, space configuration is made in the nonfigurative white box structure. Architect attempts to reify the landscapes in mind by arranging the interior spaces. The strolling paths in the interior space and the changing scenery along with the moving steps attract the visitors with nonfigurative landscapes.

The entrances of the two houses are set up at the façade, in a most simple style and standard scale. A long and slim pyramidal structure stands in front of the entrances with spot lights hidden behind, which are used for night lighting. The House A + B each has an unusual doorway. After entering the front door of House A, there is one more door, as well as a small sunken courtyard at the left, which can bring sufficient sunlight into the interior space and serves as a channel of daylighting for the underground floor. While entering the front door of House B, visitors need to turn left to get into the interior space. The living room of House B is a large space in two-storey height, while the French window is just set up at the ground floor. Stepping down along with the stairs from the first floor, visitors will enjoy a best view overlooking from the central garden to the whole living room. In this white and outspread space, a small red door becomes the dazzling highlight. The living room of House A, comparing with the spacious inner courtyard, is less important in respect of the volume.

The master bedroom of House A is at the first floor, embracing an elegant curved wall among the unified linear structures. The master bedroom of House B makes place for the spacious living room fit for hosting a party. In respect of the location, it is positioned at a hidden place, with side-open windows facing the east which makes the room bright. The inner courtyard is linked with the outer by grand stairs. What attracts visitors is that at the connecting point, a long and narrow corridor with transparent walls is set up above the ground just like a mini overpass. In House B, there is a square atrium with white walls, which is linked with the backyard through a long and narrow corridor. All the furnishings are designed by the architect personally, which are made of various kinds of materials such as stainless steel, leather and multilayer boards. The exterior walls are all in white, right-angled and naked, which become the platform for experiencing the changing of light and shadow.

The Mandarin Palace is located at Pudong area in Shanghai, close to the Century Park. Surrounded on two sides by two roads and one side by river, the base is on a flat land, where natural landscape is limited. The general layout embodies the complementary relation between buildings and water bodies in villages and towns in southern Yangtze River area. Drawing water from the southern river into the base, a meandering water channel divides the base into several peninsulas. Water channel, driveways and alleyways reticularly shuttle across the base, connecting houses, streets and the river.

Chinese culture of living is always closely linked with family concepts, which treasure unity and harmony. In a family, there are differences between old and young, male and female, who have not only common intercourse, but also private activities. The forms of residential architecture in different areas include Beijing quadrate courtyard in Northern China, private garden in area south of the Yangtze River, and walled village in Southern China. Though adjusted to local climate and custom, they basically share the same family concepts. While the customers of Shanghai Mandarin Palace are magnates and middle class families in the 21 st century, the traditional concept “respect the old, love the young” is deeply rooted. Therefore, the project is seemingly an experiment of Chinese contemporary art, but in fact, it is an interpretation of traditional family concepts. Especially as viewed from space arrangement, the project provides a modern response to the traditional family relations.

132

With respect to the design of individual buildings, the Mandarin Palace, as villas of 21st century, inherits the traditional conception and craftsmanship in civilian houses in southern Yangtze River area, referring to feeling and atmosphere that are highlighted by spatial sequence, brightness contrast and the usage of materials. Regarding the design, architects discard traditional symbols and forms, but select modern materials and construction, which indicates the times we live in. Since ancient times, in the layout of Chinese architecture from palaces to civilian houses, interior and exterior spaces have been always arranged by courtyards, which creates comfortable living environments. This concept embodies some old-but-new principles from various aspects, such as privacy protection, clear function division, climate condition adjustment in microenvironment, appropriate lighting and ventilation, and warm in winter and cool in summer. Particularly, human beings are interconnected with nature harmoniously, and the courtyards and the houses complement each other, providing a balanceable living environment. Based on the above concept, zoning the base with walls, the Mandarin Palace places the main courtyards along the central axis, with other courtyards beside. Buildings with different functions such as main hall, master bedroom, living room, and bedroom are set up in these courtyards respectively, so as to identify specific function of each courtyard.

1

133

2 Another feature of traditional civilian houses is natural lighting for interior space. In the southern Yangtzs River area, thanks to the comfortable climate, it is more appropriate to enhance the transparency of the building. The natural light, introduced from courtyard, filters into the hall through the tubular eave, which makes the light soft and even. The light rushes down from above into the small patio beside the reading room or bedroom, which is learned from the customary technique in building civilian houses. The building structure is made of different natural materials displaying different textures, which make light and shadow as ornaments in the spaces.

The design of façade and spaces of the Mandarin Palace adopts the above elements: skylights, patios, courtyards, stone gabion walls and sun-shading facilities, which present the simplicity, elegancy, serenity and harmony of traditional civilian houses, and lead the concept of villas to another state.

Villas of four different types are proposed with the same design principle. The project takes full advantage of the environment of the mountainous region to form a continuous spatial layout: mountain - community courtyard - exterior - interior. All the villas have common features with spaces for different uses clearly separated. Rooms inside are in perfect and appropriate scale and installed with complete facilities. All the villas seem to grow out from the natural mountain, being in harmony with the surrounding environment, climate and human activities. The entire project seems like an unfolding ink painting which showcases the ideology of “nature and humanity”.

enlarging green area, private and semi-private spaces. Moreover, the design stresses not only the nice environment inside the community, but also the journey back into it, through entrance among lush trees into open residential area, stepping on the circular main road with shading trees to the slim and tranquil alley, and finally into the warm and private courtyard. One of the details works as the feature of the whole project - rainwater can be collected by the roof and then flows through the drainage ditch specially designed to form a small waterfall at the convergence of the gable walls and finally into the river system inside the community. It is an integral system, combining climate, rainwater, architecture, river as well as sound together.

Located in Ming's Tomb Scenic Spot, a site with favourable natural conditions of green mountains, dense forest, blue sky and clear waters, the project is typical mountain villas. Architects pay attention to the effective and private utilisation of the land, minimising the number of roads and

The design shows respect for historical and regional culture and at the same time absorbs the essence of traditional Chinese architectural structure. Combined with modern living style and fashionable design method, the project aims to produce a completely fresh feeling for its residents.

Layout Planning Assimilating into the Surroundings and Transport System in a Well-Organised Way The 77 villas are organised along the typology of the site and keep rising with an average slope of 10%. The main road goes perpendicular to the foot of the mountain. Others all face the foot of the mountain directly and move towards the sunlight and ventilation of local area. The public road in the community is 11 metres wide with five metres in the middle for vehicles. The two sides are green belts in a stepped way. The site is elevated 1.5 metres with a 0.9-metre-high enclosing wall, which unblocks sights of pedestrians.

Humanism Residential Design and Ecological Technology Application Relation with the surroundings is largely taken into consideration. First, each villa is constructed in accord with the typological features of the site, which seems to be growing out from nature. Second, materials are carefully selected with stone exterior wall, tile roof, log ceiling and solid wood door and windows, which shows respect for nature and simple architectural form. Ecological features include traditional technology, exterior wall insulation, passive solar energy, stack effect, and through ventilation.

Complete Commercial Facility and Harmonious Landscape Design Community club and commercial facility cover a 1,860-square-metre area and they serve as the gate into the residential area. One includes dining, entertainment, cultural exchange, supermarket and real estate office and the the other as tearoom, meeting room and performing stage. In addition, the wind tower stands straight behind and the wind bell dangling on the top “sings” pleasantly as wind blows, which links the physical and mental world together. The site has favourable natural conditions with clean rivers, fresh air, and beautiful mountains. The design brings natural landscape into each villa. With the river and courtyard combined, residents in each villa can appreciate the wonderful scenes when opening the window. Mountain, water and garden generate a wide range of views. The form of ”Forest Park-public green belt-courtyard-interior-sky garden“ reflects the traditional Chinese living culture.

Design Proposal The design is proposed to emphasise the following points: the hierarchy of the rich landscape resources in the community; the scale, diversity, and interesting qualities of the alleys in the neighbourhood; The practical, convenient features and favourable dimension based on the permanent human-oriented theme. Rendering 效果图

Design Concept The concept of this project is not only to imitate the pure Chinese style of detached house, but also requires to build a traditional and poetic residential environment suitable for living as well as being appreciated. That is also considered as the primary goal to construct a high-end villa district integrating scenic gardens with residences. In Chinese architectural culture, the walls must have openings to install window and door for people and air going through. In old times, dwellings of such form elaborate the sequence and status of natural rules and human relations in a perfect way. However, being explored and interpreted more deeply, that is not expressed on the solid architectural structures, but more on the void spaces when courtyards and gardens are introduced in residential area design. In this project, what challenges the architect is how to balance the relations between dynamic and static feeling, public and private spaces by the utilisation of Chinese style structures. Spaces of different functions are separated clearly and combined with courtyards, open or enclosed, the design creates a tranquil and simple living ambience.

The project is located at the central protection area in the ancient town of Suzhou and the special site determines the role it is to play, that is to conserve the typical features of the historic surroundings. The master plan responds to the context and texture exclusive to the ancient town to follow the long history and main style of local dwellings. The features of building along river, creating gardens and white wall and black tiles are sustained to a large extent. Architects lay emphasise on building spatial sequence between main landscape axis and architecture. The orderly arrangement of architectural structures creates an environment replete with feelings of deep and narrow valley adherent to the old town. The facilities of modern community are regularly arranged with pathways as skeleton, house groups as texture and central green areas, and public activity spaces as spatial joints, which as well brings modern spirits and fresh life to the old town. The graphic design combines modern functionalism and traditional thinking in order to fulfill the requirements of practical function and inheritance of traditional style. Courtyards open and enclosed are interspersed among houses to create a tranquil living environment. The design takes full advantage of the gardens’ landscape to form a dialogue between outside and inside. Architecture extends into landscape with scenery around all the time.

The Bay Garden is located at Qingpu District, Shanghai. The site was once used as a fishpond of nearly 45 hectares, with an ideal ecological environment. In the breeding season, a large number of water birds perched there. The parcel is situated at the Island B, with altogether 20 houses of five types. The building areas above ground vary from 514 square metres to 1,022 square metres. In this design, the architects tried to bring together the architecture and the context. The latter is both natural and cultural - water is a key element of the architectural tradition in South China. Meanwhile, the contemporary

lifestyle and construction condition determine that the architecture will not be a mere repetition of the tradition. Thus, the design was developed with a set of keywords - disperse, courtyard and garden. Disperse To take apart the different functions of a villa and then reorganise them into small groups. This move makes one building more of a combination of several buildings. In this way, good ventilation and daylight are ensured in more rooms, which fits the humid and rainy climate of the locality and also blends the space inside and scenery outside. Courtyard The regrouped villas embrace several enclosed and half-enclosed courtyards of different sizes, providing the inhabitants with livable outdoor spaces. Garden The landscape from the road to water introduces a leisurely lifestyle to the residents. It also echoes the experience in a traditional southern garden. So far, each villa is a house as well as a miniature garden. People come here for the enjoyment of everyday life as well as sceneries. In form, the gable wall and sloped roof reflect the traditional building elements in the vernacular architecture of the south whereas the untraditional construction materials - grey stone, aluminium alloy doors, windows and roofing, a steel channel that frames the wall, etc. - are a new interpretation of the regional heritage.

“Return to nature after a long time in place of confinement” ... Returning to My Farm by TAO Yuanming, a famous poet in China who advocates an idyllic life

Bird's-eye View

About 1,500 years ago, TAO Yuanming, a famous poet in China, began his philosophy of life by returning to nature. From that time on, many Chinese scholars have been living in such a way in order to achieve inner peace. Architects of this project take inspiration from idyllic life and based on the context of the site, they seek to build ideal living space for those who would like to live close to nature. The design focuses on the integration with nature. After a deep research of the surrounding environment, the architects make full use of the existing typology of the site to create a public lawn which provides a nice place for residents’ communication and entertainment and then upgrade the living quality of the entire residential neighbourhood. The house is built with a grey block as foundation and white balconies as horizontal connection elements. In addition, the houses differ from each other in materials and roof colours. Together, these houses create a fresh and elegant environment. Red terra cotta tiles, shingles and aluminium panels form a sharp contrast with the grey block and white balconies and at the same time bring in touches of vividness and freshness.

THE MERGED-IN-MOUNTAIN HOUSES OF SPRING VALLEY RESORT BEIJING Beijing WSP Architects

The site is located in a valley sloping from southeast to northwest. The two single-family houses are just situated in the south-facing hillside next to beautiful poplar trees growing in the middle of the valley. From these two south-facing houses, one can see another twelve courtyardstyle guest-houses within the community, poplar trees in the south and the hills in the background. With the roof surfaces parallel to the hillside, the houses with their volumes appear being imbedded into the hill. The threestorey volume descends according to the terrain. Only one-third of the volume is exposed through the façades. The houses blend themselves into the natural landscape, as homage to the hill, stones and trees. In consideration of height differences in the interior, six courtyards with particular functions are arranged. By connecting itself to the entrance corridor, the independent tearoom in the south stretches out from the main volume and encloses the entrance courtyard and main courtyard together with the huge pitched roof. The function areas are divided into four

196

horizontal volumes according to the type. Leaning to the terrain, the pitched roof is the extension of the south façade. The seven big roof openings matched to the six courtyards are actually the south viewing windows on the façade. The building is reinforced concrete shear wall construction, with roughsurface granite hung on the outer wall surface and the roof. Wooden grating and painting are employed in the outer wall towards the inner courtyard. The south enclosure also has openable wooden louvres controlling views to inside and outside. GSHP (Ground Source Heat Pump System) is used to provide energy for the hot water floor radiant heating of the building. Insulation and an air cavity are set between the concrete wall (inside) and granite (outside). These four layers together constitute the outer wall. In order to improve the energysaving effect, WSP Architects have chosen thermally separated aluminium window frame and insulating glass in the window components.

Located in Huairou County, a famous scenic spot and the first large-scale residential area for spending weekend and holiday in Beijing, the project is operated based on the style of Longshan Xinxin Town I, but at the same time, has its own feature. The design addresses dialogue between public and private space, between modern simplicity and natural complexity. In addition, architects aim to combine practical function and artistic element in order to emphasise both individual character and overall integration. The final proposal of “natural village” comes into shape after a comparative analysis, which can showcase the growing process of living community in a vivid and unrestrained way. The design implies the soul of traditional village with the concept of distinct division of area and special emphasis on feature. The existing cross road forms the main axis of the site and divides it into several smaller parts with their own pathways individually. The entire site looks like a green sea with different islands floating on it. The islands are interlinked with each other through pathways. The design of enclosed space usually stretches emphasis on creating feeling of belonging. Thus, the inner courtyard is constructed with spaces for circulation, resting, playing games, sight viewing and enjoying the cool. Moreover, the open courtyard performs as transition space between private residence and public place and provides a common living room for neighbours. The courtyards in different residential communities boast their own “personalities” through difference in flower racks, ponds, landscape walls and arrangements of planting trees, which bring distinctive views for residents.

The houses differ in volume and form to seek distinct identity and diversified feeling while they share common features in terms of storey height and depth. The double pitch roof highlights a rustic atmosphere, which draws architectural structure and human beings together. Here, architecture serves man and scenery becomes foil to man.

Design Principles 1. Modern Chinese style: residential project embodying modern style and Chinese culture; 2. Layout: taking inner courtyard as a core element; 3. Building a quiet, private, tidy, beautiful as well as civilised residential environment suitable for living and communicating with courtyards, green areas and trees all over the community. Site Analysis The master plan includes three parts of A, B, and C and this low-rise townhouse project is located in part A with a site area of 130,327.3 square metres. To the north, there are mountains and the architecture is required to recede from the property line over 6 metres. To the south, there is a road and the green area should recede from the property line over 4 metres. On the west, a natural lake exists and on the east, there is a factory, receding from the property line more than 10 metres. Overall, with beautiful natural surroundings and a complete net of transportation and public facilities, the site is appropriate for being developed. Layout 1. The design aims to create a tranquil and elegant living environment based on the favourable location and natural scenic context of the site. The houses varying in height are built in a graceful disorder and immersed in green trees. The traditional residential form integrates with the modern architectural style. Sustainability, human-orientation and distinct cultural ambience form the three main features of the project.

2. Variable interior layouts are proposed on the basis of each house’s position and orientation, making the living room and main bedroom have a good view. In addition, each house has its own back courtyard in order to improve the overall qualities of the community as well as increasing attraction and competitive strength. 3. New-pattern, distinctive and humanised community service and property management space provide an elegant and convenient, comfortable and nice living ambience. 4) Close management is adopted through appropriate allocation of gated entrances to ensure safety inside the community. Planting Design The site is surrounded with green hills and blue waters, lush trees, fragrant flowers and singing birds weaving a favourable context. 1. Each house has an independent garage and private garden on the ground floor. The garden is in perfect harmony with the planting landscape and central lake in the community and can be planned according to the owner’s favourites, further emphasising the “human-oriented” concept and providing a garden-like environment for residents. As for the arrangement of functional spaces, owner ’s taste and requirements are taken into consideration to ensure a comfortable and delightful environment. The backyard garden resembles the courtyard of traditional dwellings while the roof shows the form of garden pavilion. The façades of the houses are decorated with different colours to be fused into the natural surroundings. 2. The central lake as the core of the entire landscape and the mountain

scenery echo each other at a distance and form a harmonious scene. In addition, with natural landscape and private garden of each house, the community highlights landscape of various levels and full of vitality. 3. Specially designed small garden ornaments and sculptures are placed on the sides of the lanes to form the axis of the landscape as well as increasing cultural atmosphere. The feeling of sequence and diversity of spaces bring residents together. 4. The community club is located on the hillside in B block, which can overlook the entire site and plays with the multi-peaked mountain range. Circulation The relatively flat typology of the site determines the position of the entrances and exits, connected with the central road. The main entrance sits near the lake and is interlinked with the roads of the second phase project. There are two entrances with 5-6 metres distance to the central road. Each house has an indoor garage and only part of the area outside club and commercial buildings is designed with parking to satisfy requirements of firefighting.

232

Vertical Planning The site is higher in north and lower in south; therefore, the vertical planning is arranged with the needs of variation of façades, landscape planting and routing of water drainage. In addition, the interior layout of the architectural structures is adjusted according to the site typology and downward direction of public roads in order to reduce the earth volume of the site. Roads inside the community form a coherent relationship with the ones outside. Pipelines The outdoor pipelines include water supply pipes, sewage pipes, rainwater pipes, gas pipes, lighting and electric cables, and telecommunication cables. Engineers of different disciplines connect them to the municipal pipeline system. Moreover, the distribution of these pipelines should satisfy the basic technique requirements and obey the relevant rules regarding minimum space to ensure the normal operation.

ZHENGZHOU NEW UNITED TOWN

Zhenzhou, Henan Province Beijing Sino-Sun Architects & Engineers 郑州联盟新城 河南省 郑州市 北京东方华太建筑设计工程有限责任公司 Site Area: 53,481.082m2 Gross Floor Area: 43,808.63m2 Design Time: 2005 Architect: Beijing Sino-Sun Architects & Engineers Collaboration: Newsdays Interior Design & Construction Co., Ltd. Photographer: Courtesy of the architect 占地面积:53481.082 平方米 建筑面积:43808.63平方米 设计/建成时间:2005年/20?

Design Requirement The project is required to last 50 to 100 years with seismic fortification intensity of 7 degrees. In order to satisfy the requirements of high-end and modern living requirements, the U-Town project boasts simple form, fresh and distinct Chinese style as well as fine outdoor environment.

Layout Programmes: The project is composed of four parts, including club, multistorey residential area, low-rise residential area and a central square. Lowrise houses perform as the central part and form the skeleton of the entire project. The club is an independent structure adjacent to the secondary entrance, being linked conveniently with other parts. The multi-storey residential area approaches the main road of the city to the north. All the public and functional spaces are located on the north side to stop the noise and at the same time to enrich the form of the building. Besides, all the rooms are south oriented, with garages in the semi-basement. Layout Features: On the basis of programmes, the low-rise houses are mainly in the form of “courtyard in courtyard”. The semi-public courtyard and private courtyard are connected by lanes. Diversified spaces are formed through the combination of walls, trees and buildings in order to regenerate the traditional Chinese living styles. Individual Houses: 1. Individual houses are designed with two basic forms both with a courtyard as the central element: front yard and back yard as well as front yard and atrium. Different forms are generated based on the basic ones to create various living environments. 2. The main rooms are south oriented and rooms facing the courtyard have large windows in order to ensure natural lighting and good ventilation. 3. Adequate space for tube well is preserved to satisfy future needs.

Green System

248

Architectural Style 1. The concept is to create Chinese-style houses in an abstract way rather than in physical form. 2. Traditional Chinese materials such as black bricks and blue stones and modern materials like concrete, metal and glass are used. 3. Modern design methods are employed to show features of modern time.

1

249

2 Planting The green space system includes public green space, green land next to residential houses, green space attached to roads and green space as public building complement. The low-rise house with independent entrance and courtyard is the main residential form, and thus the green land next to residential house covers an area of 11,905.9 square metres, which shows the inward feature of traditional Chinese architecture. Public green space of 3,263.3 square metres is built in the centre of the residential area to satisfy the needs of residents and to create an intimate and natural environment. Besides, the design combines green land with square. On the basis of semidry and semi-humid climate characteristics in Zhengzhou, water landscapes are brought in to create a more humid micro environment. Suitable plants and floor-covering materials are selected, which makes the buildings and the surroundings integrate into a whole.
