Presentation This piano method contains a collection of pieces and may also be used as a repertoire book. The method gives students the opportunity to build on prior learning and fully assimilate the material as the pieces become increasingly difficult. Musical concepts are presented one at a time, with examples and exercises provided in the Appendices. Students then put these new concepts into practice as they learn and perform the pieces, further exploring and assimilating the new ideas and skills. In Book One, the hands remain in the same position on the keyboard to help students learn the songs more easily. This allows them to focus on rhythm, fingers and hand coordination without worrying too much about the notes. The finger numbers above the notes gradually disappear so that students develop their music reading skills.

The repertoire The repertoire was carefully selected from among the most beautiful songs from around the world. The date of composition as well as the country of origin of each song is indicated along with the title. The composer’s name is also given, and if the composer is unknown, a Roud number is provided. The Roud Folk Song Index is a database of songs collected from oral tradition from all over the world.

Music reading exercises Rhythm and note reading exercises are provided in the Appendices. They are listed by order of difficulty to help students develop their music reading skills.

Introduction Meter Meter refers to the element of “time” in music. It is generally thought of as the “pulse” or beat of the music. Tempo is the speed, or how fast the music is played, and is measured as “beats per minute” (BPM). The numbers on the metronome indicate BPM.

Symbols Musical notation uses symbols to indicate the duration or value of different notes.

At the beginning of each song, you’ll see a tempo (speed) marking. Example : = 120 : indicates a suggested tempo of 120 beats per minute.

Measures | Bars Music is divided into parts called measures or bars. Each measure has the same number of beats. This division is indicated by vertical lines called measure lines or bar lines. The double bar line at the end of a piece tells you the piece is finished.

The “C” note is located to the immediate left of each group of 2 black keys. Middle C is at the centre of the piano just above the pedals.

Exercises:

1- Find middle C on the keyboard. 2- Find 3 other Cs on the keyboard. 3- The teacher plays a random note on the keyboard and the student says the note name. 4- Repeat exercise 3 several times.

Changing thumb position The thumb changes position when it passes under the fingers or when the fingers cross over the thumb, using it as a pivot point. We use this technique in scales and arpeggios to move the hand up and down the keyboard. Exercise: The C scale.

Pass the thumb under the 3rd finger

Cross the 3rd finger over the thumb

Pivot point The thumb is often used as a pivot point to help a finger reach an extra note without changing hand position.

The 2nd finger crosses over the thumb to play B while the thumb remains on C.

Extension The thumb can skip a note to play a lower note extension without changing hand position.

The thumb skips a note to play B while the 2nd finger remains on D.
