Degrees of comparison dibagi menjadi 3 macam, yaitu: 1.      Positive degree Positive degree yaitu perbandingan yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kesamaan antara dua benda, sehingga kata sifatnya utuh tidak berubah. Dalam positive degree ini ciri-cirinya terdapat kata as . . . . as yang berarti sama, atau se-. Contoh dalam kalimat a.       Mustofa is as handsome as Shidqi. b.      A buffalo is as big as a cow. c.       Samsung is as expensive as Oppo. 2.      Comparative degree Dari bahasanya saja sudah diketahui comparative berarti membandingkan sesuatu atau antara benda yang satu dengan yang lainnya, dimana salah satunya lebih dari pada yang lain. Ciri-ciri dari bentuk comparative ini terdapat tambahan –er maupun more than yang berarti lebih daripada. Bentuk comparative dibagi menurut suku katanya: a.       Adjective dengan satu suku kata (one syllable) Untuk kata sifat dengan satu suku kata maka bentuk komparatifnya ditambah imbuhan –er, contoh: Long – longer Cheap – cheaper Big – bigger Small – smaller Contoh dalam kalimat: -          Shidqi is smaller than Mustofa -          Personal computer is cheaper than Laptop b.      Adjective dengan dua suku kata (two syllables) Komparatif dalam dua suku kata sebagian menggunakan  imbuhan –er, sebagian juga menggunakan – more. Contoh: Clever – cleverer Narrow – narrower Modern – more modern Famous – more famous Etc. Contoh kalimat: -          Trumia is happier than Tuti. -          Tegar is cleverer than Irfan. -          Shidqi is more handsome than Mustofa. -          Young Almusto is more famous than Cyril Lahzah Kumiko c.       Adjective dengan tiga suku kata (three syllables) Tingkat komparatif dengan tiga suku kata wajib menggunakan imbuhan –more. Contoh: Beautiful – more beautiful Diligent – more diligent Expensive – more expensive Contoh kalimat: -          Trumia is more beautiful than Yahro. -          Shidqi is more diligent than Gempi. -          Megapro is more expensive than Supra. 3.      Superlative degree

Superlative degree memiliki tingkatan paling tinggi di antara yang lain. Tingkatan paling atau ter-, terpandai, terkaya, paling rajin, paling gemuk, dll. Ciri-ciri dari tingkatan ini adalah terdapat imbuhan – est/st atau most kemudian sebelum kata sifat ditambah dengan “the”. Untuk kata sifat bersuku kata satu menggunakan –est/st, kata sifat bersuku kata dua sebagian menggunakan –est/st, sebagian tertentu menggunakan most, kemudian yang bersuku kata tiga wajib menggunakan most. Contoh: Long – longer – longest Rich – richer – richest Happy – happier – happiest Expensive –more expensive – most expensive Interesting – more interesting – most interesting Contoh kalimat: -       Mustofa is the most handsome man in the world. -       Muhammad is the richest person. -       The plane is the fastest transportation. -       Mathematic is the most difficult subject at school



Pengertian Comparison Degree Comparison Degree untuk menunjukkan perbandingan. Dalam Comparison Degree, adjective  (kata sifat) atau adverb  (kata keterangan) akan mengalami perubahan bentuk sesuai dengan tingkatan perbandingannya. Oleh karena itu, Comparison Degree bisa juga disebut sebagai Tingkatan Perbandingan.

Fungsi Comparison Degree Comparison Degree digunakan ketika hendak membandingkan satu hal dengan hal yang lain.



Tingkatan Comparison Degree Comparison Degree memiliki tiga tingkat, yaitu positive degree, comparative degree, dan superlative degree. Apa perbedaan ketiganya? Yuk, kita lihat sama-sama di gambar berikut!

Pola dan Contoh Kalimat Comparison Degree Setelah tau perbedaan dan pola dari ketiganya, sekarang waktunya belajar contoh kalimat dari Comparison Degree, nih. Kita bahas satu per satu, ya!



Positive Degree Pada positive degree, kedua hal yang dibandingkan berada di level yang sama atau sebanding, oleh karena itu digunakan as adjective/adverb as. Misalnya, “You are as pretty as her.” memiliki arti kamu sama cantiknya dengan dia.

Comparative Degree



Pada comparative degree, salah satu dari kedua hal yang dibandingkan memiliki sifat ‘lebih’ dibanding hal lainnya, oleh karena itu digunakan adjective/adverb + -er atau more + adjective/adverb. Misalnya, “You are prettier than her.”

Superlative Degree Pada superlative degree, hal yang dibicarakan memiliki sifat ‘paling’ di antara yang lainnya, oleh karena itu digunakan adjective/adverb + -est atau most + adjective/adverb. Misalnya, “Yo u are the prettiest girl in school.” memiliki arti kamu adalah perempuan paling cantik di sekolah.

“Kapan sih, harus menggunakan -er/-est dan kapan harus menggunakan more/most?” Sini, sini, mendekat. Aku bisikin jawabannya! Penggunaan -er/-est atau more/most harus disesuaikan kembali dengan adjective/adverb yang digunakan dalam kalimat.  Terdapat beberapa aturan yang harus temen-temen ketahui, antara lain:



Adjective/adverb dengan 1 syllable (suku kata) Maksud dari 1 syllable (suku kata) yaitu adjective/adverb tersebut tidak dapat dipenggal, sehingga pengucapannya hanya satu kali saja.  Contoh:   



Cheap dilafalkan sebagai /chip/, bukan /chi-ep/ Large dilafalkan sebagai /larj/, bukan /lar-je/



Adjective/adverb dengan 1 syllable selalu menggunakan -er/-est.  Tetapi jika adjective/adverb tersebut berakhiran huruf konsonan yang didahului oleh 1 huruf vokal, maka huruf konsonan terakhirnya harus ditulis ganda.

Big berubah bentuk menjadi bigger dan biggest, bukan biger dan bigest, karena big berakhiran huruf konsonan g dengan didahului 1 huruf vokal i, sehingga huruf konsonan terakhirnya harus ditulis ganda. Sedangkan cheap ditulis sebagai cheaper dan cheapest, bukan cheapper dan cheappest, karena cheap berakhiran huruf konsonan p tetapi didahului oleh 2 huruf vokal yaitu e dan a, sehingga huruf konsonan terakhirnya tidak perlu ditulis ganda.



Adjective/adverb dengan 2 syllables (suku kata) Maksud dari 2 syllables (suku kata) yaitu adjective/adverb tersebut dapat dipenggal menjadi 2, sehingga pengucapannya terdiri dari 2 kali ucap.  Contoh:   



Happy dilafalkan sebagai /hep-pi/ Clever dilafalkan sebagai /kle-ver/



Adjective/adverb dengan 2 syllables bisa menggunakan more/most.

Berakhiran -er, -le, -ow, contoh: clever, simple, shallow Berakhiran -y, tetapi y berubah bentuk menjadi i, contoh: happy menjadi happier dan happiest



Adjective/adverb dengan 2 syllables yang menggunakan more/most memiliki ciri-ciri: 



Berakhiran -ly, -ful, -less, -ing, -ed, -ous, contoh: calmly, painful, hopeless, boring, worried, famous



Adjective/adverb dengan 3 atau lebih syllables (suku kata) Maksud dari 3 atau lebih syllables (suku kata) yaitu adjective/adverb tersebut dapat dipenggal menjadi 3 atau lebih, sehingga pengucapannya terdiri dari 3 kali ucap atau lebih.  Contoh:   



Expensive dilafalkan sebagai /eks-pen-siv/ Comfortable dilafalkan sebagai /kam-fer-te-bel/ 13



Adjective/adverb dengan 3 atau lebih syllables selalu menggunakan more/most.



Adjective/adverb dengan bentuk tidak beraturan (irregular form) Adjective/adverb yang tidak beraturan (irregular form) tidak mengikuti aturan penambahan -er/-est maupun more/most, karena memang sudah paten seperti itu dari asalnya.
