FILM 5 Director’s Treatment Template This template is designed to help FILM 5 applicants get a sense of what could be included in their director’s treatment. You do not have to follow this template or include information for each category. The director’s treatment should be no longer than 2 pages. A clear, concise treatment is favoured over a long, inconcise treatment. You may include images in your treatment as visual aids to explain your ideas. Using headings in the director’s treatment is often a good way to organize your ideas and make the document easy for jury members to follow. Do NOT re-explain the story you told in your script. The goal of the treatment is to describe HOW you are conveying ideas through the medium of film. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH: Introduce and summarize what you are going to talk about in your director’s treatment. What is the main concept, theme and mood of your film? How to you plan to relay these ideas? How, using film techniques, do you plan to convey these themes and moods? THEME & MOOD: What are the main themes and moods of your film are going to be? What is another film that inspired you? Why did it inspire you? How is it related to your film idea? Don’t assume that your reader knows the movie you’re talking about. CINEMATOGRAPHY: What style of shooting do you plan to have? What kind of lighting and colours do you plan to use? What is a film that uses a similar style? Why do you think this style would work for your film? COSTUME, MAKEUP, ART DEPARTMENT, LOCATION: Where do you want to shoot your movie? How is this important? How will set decoration, wardrobe, and makeup help you to achieve the theme and mood that you are hoping to convey? ACTING How is your choice of actors or acting style important to the story? SOUND How is the music and sound effect important for telling your story and conveying your themes/moods? CONCLUSION Summarize what you just talked about in a clear and concise paragraph. How are all of your choices related to each other?
