starting the game PLAYING THE GAME STORY Discover Silas Greaves’ story through his numerous anecdotes. Select your difficulty level: Normal, Hard or True West. Completing Story mode will unlock the New Game Plus option. This mode allows you to relive the tale of Silas Greaves with all previously unlocked skills and weapons. Note: The True West difficulty level is only available after having completed Story mode. ARCADE Have a passion for scoring big? Well this mode is for you! You will be able to play three different character classes, each with its own specificities, and revisit some iconic locations from Story mode specially redesigned for scoring mayhem. The key to success is linking kills together. You have to keep your combo multiplier growing by killing enemies or destroying stuff. Try to reach the highest scores in order to unlock skills, achieve a 3-star rating and compare your ranking on the leaderboards. DUELS Meet the legends of the Wild West face to face in a special challenge, consisting of 15 consecutive duels. These duels to the death require a sharp eye and steady hand. You’ll need both if you are to beat the famous gunslingers that Greaves encountered on his journey across the West. The task is to defeat them all in a row with only five lives. Each dead desperado adds more points to your final score, but only if you kill him honourably. If you can’t live with a dishonourable outcome, you can retry the duel, but at the cost of a life. Those able to beat all enemies earn extra points for lives saved.

gameplay basics Weaponry Six Shooter: An all-time favourite for gunslingers. It has no particular flaws, but doesn’t excel in any category either. In short, it’s a timeless classic. Quickshooter: The fastest gun in the West. Thanks to its topbreak design, it can be reloaded in the blink of an eye. Its rate of fire is an advantage, but its firepower and effective range suffers. Ranger: A powerful tool in the hands of a skilled shooter. A massive and very accurate revolver capable of inflicting serious damage. Sawed-off Shotgun: A classic sawed-off with tremendous power at very close range. It’s perfect for close quarters combat against numerous enemies. Sawed-off Rifle: Often, desperados will truncate the standard rifle’s barrel, making it easier to handle... or hide. But since its range and accuracy are badly affected, this modification isn’t as common as the sawed-off Shotgun. Rifle: A rifle is the long-range weapon of choice. It combines high power with impressive accuracy. One bullet can even take out two enemies. Shotgun: A standard long barrelled shotgun. Its firepower is comparable to that of the sawed-off Shotgun, but it has the advantage of accuracy at longer range. Dynamite: Sticks of dynamite are the perfect weapon against groups of enemies. They are powerful enough to kill every opponent in range, in one blow.

Concentration Every enemy killed refills the bar, and a full bar activates Concentration, allowing Silas to move so quickly he can take out an entire group of enemies in the blink of an eye. Some say he can even dodge bullets. It is possible to use Concentration before the bar is completely full, but this gives a shorter period of enhanced reflexes. Press the Concentration button again to exit Concentration. Trying to activate this ability when the bar is empty will briefly highlight all nearby enemies. Using Concentration skilfully and frequently is the key to success. It’s worth acquiring certain skills to greatly enhance its utility and power.

Sense of Death When Silas manages to cheat death for some time, the skull & dice indicator becomes active. It indicates that when Greaves is facing certain death, he will have one more chance to evade the fatal shot. His Sense of Death ability activates itself automatically, and it is up to you to ensure that the enemy’s bullet doesn’t find its mark. Seasoned gunslingers can also use this ability to turn the tide and attack right from the brink of death. Just be mindful that even the best of the best can’t be lucky every time. In some situations, such as when climbing ladders, Sense of Death cannot save you from your fate.

Points Each kill is rewarded with points. These gain you experience and are needed to level up your character. Killing an enemy in a simple way gives the player +50. There are many unusual ways to take out an enemy, each of which is rewarded with bonus points: Dynamite: kill an enemy using dynamite +50 Headshot: kill with a shot to the head +50 Last Breath: kill an enemy while being close to death yourself +50 Runner: kill a running enemy +50 Eyeblink: kill an enemy in Concentration mode +50 Handshake: kill an enemy with a melee attack +50 Long Shot: take a lethal shot at long range +50 Airburst: detonate a flying stick of dynamite thrown by an enemy +75 Boom!: kill an enemy with an explosive barrel +75 Full Blast: use a shotgun to kill an enemy at very close range +100 Piercing Shot: kill by shooting through cover +100 Ricochet: kill with a ricocheting bullet +100 Falling: kill an enemy while falling through the air +125 Pair: kill two enemies with a single rifle shot +150 Sweep: kill two enemies with a single shotgun shot +150 Reflex: kill an enemy in a quick time event +150 Ambush: kill an enemy with falling environmental objects +150 Wanted: kill a very important person +450/+1950

Combos By killing enemies in quick succession, you will increase the score multiplier. It will reset after a few seconds if no kills are successfully strung together. A high multiplier will not only earn you more experience points it will also allow you to climb the leaderboards in Arcade mode. Here’s a tip from a professional bounty hunter: you can shoot some objects in the environment (like barrels full of explosives) to keep your multiplier going in-between kills.

Advanced gameplay mechanics Duelling When facing another gunslinger in a fight to the death, there is one important rule to keep in mind. Each showdown can be resolved in an honourable or dishonourable manner. In the former case, Silas should only reach for his gun after his enemy draws his own weapon. If honour is not your concern, you can draw at any time, forfeiting an additional reward when you do so. In the first phase you control the targeting reticule, which must be kept over the moving opponent. As Silas focuses harder on his target, his reflexes will improve even further. This is the focus factor. You can also shorten the time required to draw a gun by keeping his hand close to the holster. This is the speed factor. In the end it all comes down to a steady hand, a cool head and good tactics. Finally, at the right moment, when you see the enemy reaching for his gun (if you are going for an honourable kill), you can reach for your gun with the fire button, aim and fire by pressing fire again. It’s all about your reaction time. The quicker you are, the more points you get. Time runs from the beginning of the actual duel – when any opponent reaches for his gun – to the fatal conclusion. Points are also awarded for headshots, even if your kill was dishonourable. Later on, you will learn a skill enabling you to evade the opponent’s bullets. Certain duels are in a Mexican standoff configuration. You have to be extra careful and take out two gunslingers one after the other in the blink of an eye. You can switch between two enemies and focus on the enemy who is looking at you.

Experience & Skill system Experience points allow Silas to level up and move forward on the road to becoming a true Legend of the West in Story mode. Each new level comes with a skill point, which you can spend at any time to unlock a skill from the skills menu. Skills are divided into three categories and improve different aspects of combat. Investing in any category also makes weapons best suited to that particular style. This can help weapons to attain legendary status - not only do they become more powerful, they also look prettier than a gob of butter on stack of flapjacks.

Gunslinger: This path is for those who enjoy an intense shootout at medium range. Among other things, it allows Gunslingers to wield dual revolvers and reload faster. Ranger: Rangers perfect their skills in fighting with long-range weapons. Advantages include more accurate aiming and being able to carry more rifle ammunition. Trapper: Mastery of close range fighting requires toughness and the ability to deal huge amounts of damage to enemies foolish enough to find themselves anywhere near a skilled Trapper.

Nuggets of Truth In Story mode, keep an eye out for pieces of lore hidden in each level. These Nuggets of Truth will shed some light on the real history of the Wild West. These notes of authenticity will provide precious information about the characters and places you encounter. They also give you additional experience points. The amount of experience will depend on the rarity of the discovery. Visit the Nuggets of Truth section in the menu to view all the items you have found. A specific skill called Truth Seeking can be unlocked to help you track these well-hidden secrets.
