NFPA 1901 Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus 1999 Edition

Copyright © 1999 NFPA, All Rights Reserved This edition of NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, was prepared by the Technical Committee on Fire Department Apparatus and acted on by the National Fire Protection Association, Inc., at its May Meeting held May 17-20, 1999, in Baltimore, MD. It was issued by the Standards Council on July 22, 1999, with an effective date of August 13, 1999, and supersedes all previous editions. This edition of NFPA 1901 was approved as an American National Standard on August 13, 1999. Origin and Development of NFPA 1901 The 1999 edition of NFPA 1901 is a general update of the 1996 edition. Two new chapters have been added, one covering the requirements for quint fire apparatus, the other covering the requirements for mobile foam fire apparatus. NFPA 11C, Standard for Mobile Foam Apparatus, is the basis for this second chapter and has been withdrawn. This edition adds a coefficient of friction requirement for steps and walkways, clarifies that the smallest size of fire apparatus covered by the standard has a chassis of at least 10,000 GVWR, defines the ambient temperatures the apparatus is expected to be able to operate in, allows more versatility in the selection of ground ladders for fire apparatus, allows more flexibility in the placement of warning lights on the sides of fire apparatus, and requires SCBA air refill stations on fire apparatus to be fully enclosed so as to contain the fragments if a cylinder ruptures during refilling. See Appendix C for a more complete history of the standard. Technical Committee on Fire Department Apparatus Jeffrey Bowman, Chair Anaheim Fire Department, CA [E] Kenneth L.
