Lesson plan Teacher: Stepan Cristina School: ,, Arany Janos” High School, Salonta Date: 27th of May 2016 Grade: 6th D Level: elementary Textbook: Enterprise coursebook Unit of learning: Come rain or shine! Topic: Present Continuous tense Objectives: By the end of this lesson, the Ss will be able to: - know when to use the Present Continuous tense; - be able to form the affirmative, negative and interrogative form of the tense - develop their listening and speaking skills; Assumptions: I assume that my students are familiar with the verb TO BE in the Present Simple and that they have a basic knowledge of simple structures.

Anticipated problems: Pupils may not understand the existence of two Present tenses as such a form probably does not exist in their mother language. Students may also omit the auxiliary verbs or use the bare infinitive without an ing ending. Solutions: T. may use choral drill Teaching Aids:

laptop; CD Teaching techniques: elicitation -conversation

- questioning

-explanation

Stages of the lesson I. WARM UP Aims -

to get students ready for the English class by having an informal

anybody is absent. She asks them how they are. Pupils respond to informal questions. T: Good morning, children! Ss: Good morning, teacher! T: How are you today? S: We’re fine, thank you! T: What’s the weather like today? Who’s on duty today? Who is absent? Ss answer the T’s questions.

clothes

Teacher announces: “ Today we are going to learn about the present continuous tense.” Time: 5 minutes Interaction: Ss – T; T – SS; Ss -SS

IV. PRESENTATION Aim: - to make students understand how is present continuous formed - To make them understand when we use present continuous tense

Procedure:

Teacher shows students a picture of an old woman with her

binoculars. Teacher asks students the following question: “ Do you think she is a nice old woman or not?” Students answer. Teacher shows students an apartment building and tell the students that she is one of the neighbors of it. Teacher tries to say what the old woman does with her binoculars. e. g She watches the people that are in the building. ( She is spying them) Teacher then asks the students what they do when they are at home. ( watch Tv, listen to music, read) Teacher tells students that the old lady Carmen is looking through binoculars and tells her friend Sofia on the phone what the people are doing. With the teacher’s help, Ss try to elicit what are two women talking about. T. provides an example and writes it on the board. Students read the sentence individually. e.g. Where is Walter? He’s in the kitchen. What is he doing? He’s eating his breakfast. Then, teacher explains how is present continuous formed. Teacher: We form the PC form (known as the present participle) by adding ing to the base form. We drop –e if the base form ends in a single letter –e e.g. take – taking We double the consonant if:  The base form ends in a single vowel+ single consonant  E.g. sit – sitting

Exceptions are consonants: w, x, y Sew – sewing; box – boxing; play – playing  The base form has two syllables and ends in l  E.g. label – labelling We change a base form ending in ie to y We add k to the base form ending in c e.g. picnic – picnicking Teacher gives students some verbs and they will have to put the right ending. With the Ss’ help, T. explains how present continuous is formed. Time: 10 minutes Interaction: T – Ss; Ss - T CONTROLLED PRACTICE ( speaking) Aims: -to promote accuracy with regard to form and pronunciation Procedure: Teacher sets the same context. Sofia and Carmen are talking on the phone. Teacher is Sofia and Carmen are the SS. e.g. Where is ……? What is….. doing? Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs and to role play. Time: 6 minutes Interaction: Ss – SS

CONTROLLED PRACTICE ( writing)
