1 Read this paragraph. It is the beginning of an article about Switzerland in a student newspaper. Then answer the questions.



a. What is the topic of the paragraph? Switzerland. b. What is the main idea about the topic? Switzerland is a country with beautiful mountains, delicious food, wonderful places to go sightseeing and polite people. c. What ideas help explain the main idea? ➢ Switzerland has many mountains, including some of the highest in Europe. ➢ Climbing or skiing down the mountains is great fun. ➢ In fact, there are four official languages in Switzerland: German, French, Italy, and Romansch. ➢ All these groups of Switzerland’s people make Swiss culture very interesting. ➢ Cities such as Bern have modern buildings like the Paul Klee Zentrum, yet the traditional alpine refuges in the mountains show that the country’s old traditional are still alive.



3. Put a tick, next to the group of sentences that makes a good paragraph. Why are the other groups of sentences not good paragraphs?



The paragraph “b” is the good paragraph because it paragraph has an exact and clear topic sentence, also it has some support ideas to explain the topic sentence, and it has a clear concluding sentence. The other groups:



Paragraph a: it doesn’t have enough supporting sentences to explain the various hobbies mentioned in the topic sentence. Also, the sentences about travelling and speaking different languages aren’t connected to the topic sentence. Paragraph c: it doesn’t enough supporting ideas to explain the topic sentence.
