1. When my teacher asked me to write the mayor, I thought about it. I thought about the changes I want. I want a playground. We had a playground, but our community got crowded. They built homes where the playground was. I want a library. We had a library, but it burned down. People said they needed too much money to build a new one. My teacher said to write about just one thing I wanted. So first I thought about everything and then I chose one thing. I chose trees. I want more trees. If we have more trees, the city will be cooler in summer. It will be prettier, too. And in winter we can put lights on them so it will be brighter. This was a change everyone would like. 2. As Toby was running speedily through the lush meadow, he took flight and soared high through the blue sky. His legs felt extremely powerful and nimble, and he couldn’t believe how fast he could move. He was deftly flying through the cool air across a lonely canyon, and he was good at it too. As he travelled the empty sky, beautiful rainbows and neon hearts streamed from the magic shoes. Toby suddenly bumped into an evil unicorn; the skies went black and Toby was very scared. The evil unicorn shot a grey beam of sad faces at Toby, and Toby barely dodged them by rolling left. Toby was very confused and worried, but he knew that the unicorn was terribly evil and must be stopped. He thought of the good things in the world, like cuddly puppies and happy butterflies. Toby lovingly shot a beam of pure goodness from his heart, hitting the unicorn gently in his wicked face. [Adapted from Morton, D.E. (n.d.). Magical Horses. I have always loved plants since I was very young. When we walked to school, I would look at the different plants. I would make up names for them and draw pictures of them. Whenever my teacher asked us to draw a picture of anything we liked, I always drew pictures of plants. Once I got to high school, I took a course that was all about plants. Most students took the course in biology, but I took the course on plants. We went into the park to identify different species. It was amazing. I found out that there were at least 27 different kinds of plants in our neighbourhood park. There were also about 12 different kinds of trees. Some were deciduous. We were there in spring, so they had their leaves. I learned that weeds are not really bad plants. They are interlopers. They come from another environment. They get to the new environment because animals bring them. The animals might pick up the seeds on their fur and they carry the seeds to the new habitat. Then they fall off and start to grow. Once upon a time there was an honest shoemaker who was very poor. Even though he worked as hard as he could, he could not earn enough to keep himself and his wife. At last, there came a day when he had nothing left but one piece of leather, which is big enough to make one pair of shoes. He cut out the shoes and left them on the bench. Then he said his prayers and went to bed, trusting that he could finish the shoes the next day and sell them. The next morning, he went to his workbench as soon as he woke up. There lay a pair of shoes, beautifully made, and the leather was gone! There was no sign of anyone having been there. The shoemaker and his wife did not know what to make of it. But the first customer who came to his shop was able to buy leather enough for two pairs. [Adapted from Center for Urban Education, DePaul University. (n.d.). The Elves and the Shoemaker.
