IDEAS AND WORKS OF TADAO ANDO: PHILOSOPHIES:

• Combining traditional Japanese influences with the design principles of Modernism, Ando has developed a unique building language that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, and space, all in harmony with nature. • Tadao Ando’s body of work is known for its creative use of natural light and for structures that follow natural forms of the environment, rather than conforming to the constructed space of a building. • Ando’s erections are often characterized by complex three-dimensional circulation paths, which weave between interior and exterior space. Formed both inside large-scale geometric shapes and in the spaces between them, these paths function as routes of contemplation. His work has been described as having a haiku like effect and being tied to zen philosophy. • He uses simplified rectilinear forms. He also favours designing complex spatial circulation while maintaining the appearance of simplicity. He uses only bare concrete walls that defines the space within.

CHURCH OF LIGHT,OSAKA,JAPAN(1989) CONCEPTS:

• The set consists of two volumes (the church and a chapel secondary) prepared at an angle consistent with the urban environment. The whole arrival is indirect, as it requires to enter a side road through which you reach a small square from where the hits are distributed to the two buildings. • Both consist of rectangular blocks of concrete. The main Church of Light, is a box of 6 x 6 x 18 crossed by a wall at an angle of 15 °, which energizes the space because, being separate from the cover that allows light to filter inside creating the impression of a floating roof. The diagonal wall contains the glass entrance door, which slides horizontally. • The penetration of light in the chapel proves as the focus of the chapel where the seating is arranged in a manner facing the focus. The idea of the design was to use light in a way that would strengthen the power of spirituality. • The cold reinforced concrete blocks compliments with the warmth of wood and the penetrating light bringing about the experience of solace and hope. • For Ando, the Church of Light is an architecture of duality – the dual nature of existence – solid/void, light/dark, stark/serene. The coexisting differences leave the church void of any, and all, ornament creating a pure, unadorned space. The intersection of light and solid raises the occupants awareness of the spiritual and secular within themselves.
