Read out the following operations, and for every operations name each number’s function. a. 1,209 +118 = 1,327  One thousand, two hundred and nine plus one hundred and eighteen equals one thousand, three hundred and twenty-seven.  One thousand, two hundred and nine and one hundred and eighteen is one thousand, three hundred and twenty-seven.  One thousand, two hundred and nine is added by one hundred and eighteen is equal to one thousand, three hundred and twenty-seven. 1,209 and 118 called addends or summands, and 1,327 is called sum. b. 135 + (-132) = 3  One hundred and thirty-five plus negative one hundred and thirty-two equals three.  One hundred and thirty-five and negative one hundred and thirty-two is three.  One hundred and thirty-five is added by negative one hundred and thirtytwo is equal to three. 135 is the minuted, 132 is subtrahend, and 3 is the difference. c. 2 – (-25) = 27  Two minus negative twenty-five is twenty-seven.  Two take away negative twenty-five equals twenty-seven.  Two is subtracted by negative twenty-five is equal to twenty-seven. 2 and 25 is addends or summands, and 27 is called sum. d. 52 – 65 = -13  Fifty-two minus sixty-five is negative thirteen.  Fifty-two take away sixty-five equals negative thirteen.  Fifty-two is subtracted by sixty-five is equal to negative thirteen. 52 is the minuted, 65 is subtrahend, and -13 is the difference. e. 9 x 26 = 234  Nine is multiplied by twenty-six equals one hundred and thirty-four.  Nine times twenty-six is one hundred and thirty-four. 9 is the multiplicator, 26 is the multiplicand, and 234 is the product. f. -111 x 99 = -10,989  Negative one hundred and eleven is multiplied by ninety-nine equals negative ten thousand, nine hundred and eighty-nine.

Negative one hundred and eleven times ninety-nine is negative ten thousand, nine hundred and eighty-nine. -111 is multiplicator, 99 is the multiplicand, and -10,989 is the product. g. 36 : 9 = 4  Thirty-six is divided by nine equals four.  Thirty-six over nine is four. 36 is the divided, 9 is the divisor, and 4 is the quotient. h. 1375 : (-25) = -55  One thousand, three hundred and seventy-five is divided by negative twenty-five equals negative fifty-five.  One thousand, three hundred and seventy-five over negative twenty-five is negative fifty-five. 1375 is the divided, -25 is the divisor, and -55 is the quotient. 2. Fill the blank spaces with the right words. a. The times of three and seven is twenty-one. b. The operation that uses symbol “:” is called divison. c. 14 is the immediate successor of 13, and the predecessor of 13 are 1,2,…, and 12. d. The result of division is called quotient. e. Three multiplied by five equals fifteen. f. In 123,456,789, the hundred thousand digit is 4, and 9 is the units digit. g. We select a three number htu, as 100h + 10t + u, where h represents the hundreds digit, t represents the tens digit, and u represents the units digit. h. When we addition two numbers, for example seven plus thirteen, the answer (twenty) is called sum.

PRACTICE 2 1. Read out the following fraction a. 2/5  Two fifth / two over five b. ¾  Three fourth / three over four c. 5/8 x ¼ = 5/32  Five eights is multiplied by one quarter equals five over thirty-two  Five over eight times one quarter is five over thirty-two d. 2 ½ : 9/10 = 3 2/5  Two and one half is divided by nine over ten equals three and two over five.
