INTENSIVE LISTENING



• Listening is what you do in the classroom • The goal of intensive listening is to focus on a certain detail. • This focusing on detail is often motivated by you having to answer a question on a listening exercise or test. • Intensive listening can be quite hard to do and you may not be able to answer all the questions at first.

• Often Intensive listening exercises will go through the following stages: Before you listen



Sometimes you may be asked to look at a picture or title and you have to write down what you think about the topic or note down what you already know.



During the listening



You will have to complete a listening exercise, which will generally have two types of tasks.

Use Videos: Is a fun, flexible and complete option that you can use for intensive listening practice•



Use learning websites with audio components: These websites brief audio activities



Do guided activities that force you to focus on the basic parts of the language: Guided listening practice with questions to test your skills will help you pay more attention to the activity itself

EXTENSIVE LISTENING • All types of listening activities that allow learners to receive a lot of comprehensible and enjoyable listening input.



• In order for the students to be willing to engage in sustained listening practice, the language must be comprehensible and the contents of the materials interesting and enjoyable. • This kind of sustained practice can provide learners a network of linguistic information from which learners can “build up the necessary knowledge for using the language”.

Benefits of extensive listening



It can enhance learners’ ability to deal with normal speech rate.



It can improve their word recognition skill.



It can enhance their bottom-up listening skills, in particular the skills of recognizing word boundaries.

Suggestions for Extensive Listening Practice



Listen to audiobooks: Audiobooks are excellent for extensive listening practice because you’ll undoubtedly need to focus on overall meaning rather than individual words.



Watch authentic media. Watching movies, TV and other entertainment is useful for extensive listening
