General Purpose It is the procedure of the Safety and Security Department to provide proper instruction about how to use Eyewash and Safety Shower in case of Hazardous Material incident at Batam Aero Technic. The procedure has been complied with ANSI Z358.1-2014, as a standard for installation, inspection, and operation of emergency eyewash and safety shower. This procedure helps maximize system integrity to avoid failure and ensure fast, effective response in a emergency situation involving hazardous material. Procedures A. Eyewash and Safety Shower Installation 1. Eyewash shall be located nearby the hazardous materials workers. It must be positioned within 10 seconds (about 55 feet) from the hazardous area. 2. Eyewash shall be designed to provide enough room to allow the eyelids to be held open with the hands while the eyes are in the flushing fluid stream 3. Eyewash shall be constructed of materials that will not corrode in the presence of the flushing fluid. 4. Plumbed eyewash and safety shower station shall be permanently connected to a source of potable water. 5. Hands-free stay-open valve shall be installed and it can be used without requiring the use of the operator’s hands and must remain open until manually shut off. 6. The heads of the units (water flow pattern) must be positioned 85 - 135 cm from the surface on which the user stands and 15 cm minimum from the wall. 7. Eyewash and Safety Shower station shall be easily identified with a visible sign. B. Eyewash and Safety Shower Inspection 1.



Plumbed eyewash and safety shower shall be activated weekly for a period long enough to verify operation and ensure that flushing fluid is available.

Portable eyewash station shall be visually checked weekly to determine if flushing fluid needs to be replaced or not.



3.



Ensure push handle valve is in good condition and not stuck.

Ensure the Eyewash provide flushing fluid to both eyes simultaneously.



5.



Ensure the spray nozzles are well covered by dust caps as a protection from airborne contaminants.



6.



Ensure the water discharge/drainage is clear and not stuck



7.



Ensure the routes to eyewash and safety shower station is clearly accessible from obstructions all the time. An obstruction-free route is critical because the vision of injured employees is impaired.



8.



Ensure the portable eyewash station is kept tightly closed to prevent any contamination of flushing fluid inside the gallon.



C. Eyewash and Safety Shower Operational Instruction 1.



Ensure the eyewash and safety shower is properly installed and regularly checked.



2.



Worker who could be exposed to a hazardous chemical splash or severe dust must be properly trained in the location, use, and operation of an eyewash station.



3.



If the worker is splashed with a hazardous materials, the affected body part must be flushed immediately by pushing the handle valve and thoroughly for at least 15 minutes.



4.



If possible, remove the contact lenses before flushing the eye. Otherwise, a contact lens could trap chemicals or debris, making symptoms worse.



5.



Keep the eyes open as wide as possible to allowing the fluid reach all the areas.



6.



Look up, down, and to the sides while flushing the eyes, to ensure that no chemicals or debris trapped under the eyelides



7.



After flushing the eyes, the injured worker shall seek immediate medical attention.
