The First cover picture of “Tokyo Ghoul”. In his hand Ken holds the novel “The Egg of The Black Goat” from Sen Takatsuki. Except for using blue as the main color, I had no real plan. Somehow I am seeing from this picture that I drew it very carefully. What he is wearing should actually look like the uniform of the Anteiku cafe... For editing I used “Paint Tool SAI”.

Volume 1, Cover picture, 2012

Drawn with “Painter”. An Illustrator I know wrell uses this drawing program. Because I love his works, I used to only work with this. Except for this cover, all the pictures are drawn from a frontal perspective. After trying this one I noticed that its too troublesome.

In the end, I liked a more blue version, so I decided to use it as a cover. This is the colorful variation without blue color correction. I think it didn’t turn out that bad.

In the beginning, I had the concept of using as many colors as possible.

The cover picture of volume 3. Hinami was one of the most important characters in this volume.

I wanted to draw Shuu in an extravagant suit and sitting in an expensive chair. When he first made an appearance, my editor said that he’s surely going to be popular. “Shuu Tsukiyama” was originally the main character of my older manga from before my debut. With a girl named Chie Hori - today she shows up in a light novel of “Tokyo Ghoul” - he experienced many things. However, I will never show this original manga to other people. I have been working with Shuu for a really long time - even longer than with Ken.

The cover picture of volume 5. I drew Rize because she shows up in a special chapter as the protagonist. My sister likes this cover. I like it too because these two characters symbolise the whole story. The special chapter “Rize" was published in “Miracle Jump" par¬ allel to my series even though my editor took the job without asking me! Because I was only working with one assistant back then, and even had problems with my normal series, I was pretty pissed because of that. At least I learned how to work under pressure.

Shortly before it was finished, my PC crashed and I had to start all over again. My six hours of work were all for nothing! There was nobody in the office except for me, so my screams echoed through the empty room... Digital aid is convenient, but I am always afraid that there could be a crash.

The cover picture of volume 7. Here I drew Ken as a color picture for the first time with white hair. In the beginning he had a centipede in his hand, but I changed it because it was too creepy. After that, the picture was often used for advertisement.

Volume 7, Cover picture, 2013

The background of the previous cover was red, that’s why I chose blue for a change. Behind Ayato are Touka and the leaders of Aogiri Tree. I tried a different style with this one.

Volume 8, Cover picture, 2013

For the cover of volume 9 I drew Akira. Is Amon scratching his head because he has put in the back? I want to give him another chance on a different occasion. Akira is a character I wanted introduce since the beginning of the series. In volume 9 she finally showed up.

ill Volume 9, Cover picture, 2013

In the end I decided for Naki. The editor of “Kingdom” said: “Although I don’t know who this is, that’s a cool cover picture!” The cracking of his fingers, the 'white suit, and his blonde dyed hair are influences of Yamori, who is admired by Naki. He’s an idiot, but that’s exactly why I like him.

I had to think about what to draw for the cover of volume 10 for a long time. First Shachi and the twins came to mind, but Shiro and Kuro only showed up very briefly, and a man with a moustache is also not a good motive for a cover.

Ken in agony with the twins. I put all my energy into Ken, and after that, I had no power left to draw Shiro and Kuro as thoroughly. In a bookstore I saw a sale sign for this volume. It said: “The Kakuja has awakened!’ I thought that was a really cool slogan.

The cover of volume 12 is Uta. Unusual for such pictures, I drew him from the side. I didn’t use many color planes because I wanted to try something different. That’s why I drew Lotus flowers. On the back I drew Yomo. In the beginning I thought about putting him in the front, but I want to save that for a special occasion. Now he is sulking in the back.

The cover of volume 13. When Arima showed up in the Tokyo Ghoul spin-off “Jack”, he had dark blue hair. After that his hair turned brighter and brighter which I didn’t think too much about. After I saw him in the Anime with dark blue hair, I thought that I had to decide on something sooner than later. That’s why I decided for him as a cover. The first chapter of volume 13 is about Juuzou’s past. I arranged it that way because I wanted to draw him for the cover again. In retrospect, I’m thinking that I should give as many characters as possible the chance to be on a cover picture.

This picture was drawn after I worked on Volume 1 and the special chapter [Rize] under hellish time pressure. In this episode Ken started as a waiter in Cafe Anteiku. Contrary to the happy atmosphere in this picture I was totally exhausted. Yomo is always in a bad mood. In this picture I also adopted the background of #001. The story of a manga is generally created together with an editor. I personally find this method of work stressful and after a lot of thinking I gathered all my courage to tell my editor that I wanted to make my own choices. His answer was: “Sure thing! That’s what I was waiting for.” My jaw almost dropped.

A cover picture for issue #100? Fine, then I’ll draw a picture with all the characters because it is also going to be used for a poster. First, I’ll draw the characters that appear the most: The twins, Shachi and Naki. On Shachi s head I’ll add the leaders of Aogiri. After that its the investigators turn - Amon, Akira, Shinohara and Juuzou - I also must not forget Kaneki s friends from the 6th ward. Til paint Hide and Touka large because they appear so seldom lately.

Rough sketch. Shachi s head turned out to be weird...

I m going to place the three leaders somewhere else. I’ll draw the twins bigger. Rize and Ayato are also quite important. Hmm, actually there are more characters that I want to draw... Anteiku, CCG members, Loser, the guys with the clown masks. Oh, I have no space left for Nishiki... Shachi looks even more demonic.

The second cover picture for the “Weekly Young Jump I think the anime started around that time. Most times I didn’t decide on the colors until I drew all the lines. I chose red often. A yellow background also fit the picture, but in the end, I drew it bright red.

The cover picture of Tokyo Ghoul [jack]. Summer 2013, I published a spin-off in the manga-app “Jump LIVE”. The story is about the school days of Arima and his friend Taishi Fura. Because I drew this app-manga parallel to my series, I had to start working on it immediately after handing the chapter in. Luckily, I was allowed to draw more relaxed and at my own tempo because I didn’t need any assistants to help me.

I didn’t like the clear colors of the last volume [Days] after all. That’s why I drew in a milder tone for [Empty space]. Out of all the characters, I especially like Morimine. Is Chie trying to take a photo of Kaneki’s butt? Because she is one of my favourite characters I asked Mr. Towada - the author of the light novels for “Tokyo Ghoul” to write about her. I read the story and made some suggestions here and there.

I think a rough draft of a postcard that would be used by bookstores at around.. I think when the 7'th volume was being released. However, the distance proportions felt off too close, so I gave up.
